WHY JAMIITOWN SHIFTED FROM CORAL BLOCKS TO CEMENT INTERLOCKING BLOCKS
A Step Toward Responsible Development
At Jamiitown, we believe that true progress is not just about building homes—it’s about building responsibly, sustainably, and ethically. As part of our commitment to redefining living in Kilifi County and beyond, we made a strategic and values-driven decision to transition from using coral blocks to cement interlocking blocks in our construction projects. This shift was guided by three critical factors: environmental protection, construction safety, and the fight against child labour.
- PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT
For decades, coral blocks were a common building material along Kenya’s coastline. However, harvesting coral stone comes at a great environmental cost. It leads to the destruction of marine habitats, accelerates coastal erosion, and disrupts natural ecosystems that are crucial to biodiversity and climate resilience. As responsible developers, we could not ignore these consequences.
Cement interlocking blocks offer a more sustainable alternative. They are manufactured in controlled environments, reduce construction waste, and minimize the carbon footprint. By embracing this method, we at Jamiitown are doing our part to preserve Kilifi’s natural beauty and ensure future generations can enjoy the coastal environment.
- ENHANCING SAFETY AND DURABILITY
Coral blocks, while accessible, are naturally porous and vulnerable to weathering, especially in high-humidity and saline conditions like those found in Kilifi. Over time, buildings made from coral blocks may suffer from structural weaknesses, requiring frequent repairs and posing safety risks to occupants.
Cement interlocking blocks provide superior strength, stability, and resistance to harsh weather conditions. They also allow for faster construction and better load distribution, improving the quality and longevity of our housing units. Our homeowners deserve not just beauty but safety and peace of mind.
- ENDING THE EXPLOITATION OF CHILD LABOUR
Perhaps the most painful truth behind coral mining is the widespread use of underage boys in the quarries. Many young boys are forced into physically demanding labour under unsafe conditions, with little to no pay. This is not only a violation of human rights but a stain on the conscience of our industry.
At Jamiitown, we are deeply committed to ethical development. We can not build a brighter future on the back of broken dreams. Our move to cement interlocking blocks is part of our broader campaign to end child exploitation and ensure that every person involved in our projects is treated with dignity and fairness.
MOVING FORWARD
This shift is more than just a technical change—it is a reflection of our core values. We are proud to lead by example in promoting sustainability, structural safety, and ethical labour practices in Kilifi County.
At Jamiitown, we’re not just building homes. We’re building hope, fairness, and a future we can all be proud of.
